Biosketch:

Dr Victor Sabe is a postdoctoral researcher in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), specialising on recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), a rare disorder characterised by the development of small, wart-like growths (papillomas) in the respiratory tract. His research focus is on interventional studies involving primarily juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis patients, using the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil 9 and Bevacizumab (Avastin), a humanized monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). He holds a Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from UKZN, and two Masters degrees, one in the same discipline and another in clinical research. His research contributions include several published and manuscripts under-review on novel NOTA-based chelators and their potential as metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors. His work in identifying prospective inhibitors for Mycobacterium tuberculosis during his MSc has also been widely recognised. Dr Sabe’s academic journey has been marked by numerous prestigious scholarships and grants, including the NRF Research Grant, College of Health Science Scholarship and the UKZN top-achiever (Summa cum laude) Award.

Dr Sabe comes with extensive experience in pharmaceutical chemistry, molecular biology, clinical research, scientific writing and laboratory quality management. He brings a diverse skill set to his current research endeavours. He has supervised MSc students and worked in a research laboratory, gaining valuable experience in project management, scientific communication, and quality control. He is committed to advancing medical research to improve patient outcomes, particularly in paediatric populations, by leveraging his afore-mentioned expertise. His interdisciplinary approach and dedication to innovation is an asset to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology.
