Dr Andile Sibiya joined the few women in surgery and leadership, as she took office as Head of UKZN’s Ortorhinolaryngology (ENT) Department at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine at the beginning of October. Dr Sibiya completed her MBChB at the University of Cape Town and did her internship and community service at Ngwelezana Hospital, Empangeni. She trained in her ENT specialisation with the University of Pretoria, completing her MMed there and then staying on to serve as a consultant. In 2016, she relocated to Ngwelezana Hospital. Passionate about clinical service delivery and broadening her own management skillset, Sibiya recently completed an MBA with the University of Oxford.
She joined a department with highly passionate people. The team of consultant surgeons here have held together the department in challenging times, when the burden of disease and service delivery demands have been very high.
ENT as a specialisation appealed to her when she was still at medical school, and that she is glad that she followed her passion because it changes lives for the better.
